About Integrated Wildfire Management on the Western Cape
Enviro Wildfire Services, a registered Nonprofit Organisation, operates within the fire-prone Western Cape province of South Africa and works closely with conservation groups, fire departments, government organisations and private landowners.
Weather and Climate
The cold wet winters bring the threat of accidental shack fires as a result of candles and liquid fuel stoves being used for light, heat and cooking. The hot dry summers quickly spread vegetation fires that cause millions of Rands worth of damage every year.
Wildfires and Wildfire Season
While the wildfire season for the Western Cape 15 years ago used to be approximately 3 months of the year, from December to February, the wildfire season is now recognized as lasting nearly 8 months each year, from October to May.
Visitors to the Western Cape
Tourists and hikers in the surrounding mountains are advised by the local authorities via pamphlets and information boards on preventative measures and procedures in the event of a wildfire.
Wildfire Prevention Resources
Resources consist of materials from organisations that receive state funding including posters, flyers, pamphlets and children’s workbooks. A comprehensive Awareness Campaign is about to be launched for the coming fire season. Visit www.envirowildfire.co.za for additional articles.
A comprehensive resource for wildfire prevention in South Africa can be found at Firewise Communities for South Africa.
